Description For Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha is a member of the Solanaceae family. It is cultivated in Northwestern and Central India. The species is an annual to perennial branched under a shrub to herb of about 30 cm to 120 cm height. Root is medicinally essential part in addition to leaves and seeds. Alkaloids (withanoloids and withanins) present in the roots are believed to be useful in treatments of stress-induced disorders, fatigue, dropsy, male impotence, neurosis, etc. and is used as a general tonic. It is cultivated in Madhya Pradesh near Mandsaur and Neemach.

  • How to grow Ashwagandha Plant:

    Botanical Name: Withania somnifera

    Family: Solanaceae (Potato family)

    Description: Ashwagandha is a perennial, evergreen, branched under-shrub (60-120 cm tall). The plant looks like brinjal plant, but the leaves are darker & thicker. The fruit is small, globose berry, orange in colour but turning red on maturity. Birds feast on these fruits.

    Planting Season: Throughout the year.

    Climate: Plant prefers cold, dry weather of low rainfall regions. It can be grown successfully in Indian gardens.

    Soil: Plant prefers well-drained, light sandy loam, a medium fertile soil of 6-8 pH.

    Location: Outdoors.

    Planting: Plant Ashwagandha in a regular 8-10 inch round pots with a height of minimum 1 feet.

    Sunlight: Full sun (Min 6-8 hours)

    Watering: Plant requires regular, moderate watering. A potted plant can be watered every alternate day by watering can.

    Manuring: Add plenty of cow dung manure or compost in potting soil at the time of planting.

    Plant protection: Keep the soil free from pathogenic fungi by adding Trichoderma.

    Propagation: Plants are propagated by seed sowing. Seeds can be sown directly in the pot.

    Medicinal properties: The plant has adaptogenic, immuno-modulator, aphrodisiac, anti-stress & mildly sedative properties. It provides a remedy for general debility, fatigue, stress-induced disorders, dropsy, dyspepsia, hiccup, joint pains, improves male potency, reduces neurosis and inflammation in lungs.

    Plant part used: Roots & leaves.

    Chemical constituents: The plant contains a large number of alkaloids, & withanolides (0.13- 0.68 %), which are therapeutically important.

    How to use: Direct use of Ashwagandha plant as a home remedy is not recommended to hobby gardeners. Inappropriate & unguided use of raw plant parts can even prove to be toxic to the human body.
    Professionally, Ashwagandha roots are employed in a large number of Ayurvedic medicines, which are prescribed to patients by doctors and physicians.
