Sowing

  • Gawar seeds can be sown throughout the year.
  • Gawar seeds can be sown directly in containers or on raised beds.
  • You can use big sized circular pots or grow bag with 16” diameter and minimum depth of 8-10 inches to grow Green Podded Bean.
  • Make sure the container of your choice has uniform drainage holes at the bottom.
  • Fill this container with a growing medium of your choice.
  • Ideal growing medium to grow bean is 2 part garden soil & 1 part any organic manure or 1 part garden soil, 1 part Coco Peat & 1 part Vermicompost.
  • Sow 2 seeds at the centre of your container.
  • On raised beds, sow two seeds per spot keeping a distance of 2 x 2 ft.
  • Push seeds in the medium with your finger and cover the seeds with surrounding soil.
  • Water the sown seed bed immediately by a light shower using a watering can.
Fill the cells/cups with a moist coco-peat medium

Caring

  • Your seeds will germinate within first 6-8 days.
  • Tiny seedlings will appear at this stage.
  • Second week onwards, seedlings will start growing into a small bean plant.
  • After the second week, keep only one seedling at one spot.
  • Cut off small, weak and lagging seedlings with a pair of scissors.
  • The cluster bean plant needs full sunlight in order to thrive. Make sure you keep your containers in a sunny spot and make your raised beds also in a spot which receives ample sunlight.
  • Water your potted plant every alternate day in winter & every day in summer.
  • Use a watering can to make sure your plant gets water in the form of a shower. You can alternately also use a drip irrigation system.
  • When your bean plant is more than 45 days old, feed one tablespoon of 15:15:15 (NPK) fertilizer per plant or mix handful of Vermicompost in the soil around each plant.
  • Cluster beans grow upright with oval leaves and the beans grow in clusters. Spray the plant wih organic pesticide to keep pests at bay.
  • Keep a watch for early signs of any insect/fungal or any other infections.
  • In the second month, your plant will start flowering.
  • Fresh cluster beans can be harvested two to three months after sowing the seeds.
  • Harvesting can continue for a very long time, as long as plant survives.
Hold the seeds and sow 2-3 seeds per cell/cup. Since Lavender seeds are small in size, do not sow them deep

1.Gawar is also used as a livestock feed and for producing a guar gum, which is used as a thickener and emulsifier in commercial food processing. It has almost 8 times the thickening power as cornstarch, and is used in dressings, sauces, milk products, and baking mixes.

2.Cluster beans is cultivated extensively in India, and across the word for the extraction of gum from its seeds which is used for fracking, a process used to extract oil and gas from oil shale.
