All the plant gossip, through the grapevine. Pun intended

Plants growing in containers need more fertilizing than those in the ground. The more you water, the more quickly you flush the nutrients out of the soil.

Plant Essentials

Fertilizer/ feed for the plant:While the Cypress does not need a nutrient rich soil, a good generic fertiliser every month is essential for good growth. Using a 19:19:19 NPK, diluted as per instructions is a good idea.
Repotting : Repot the plant once it has outgrown its current planter. However, repotting the plant once a year in fresh well-draining soil will ensure good growth.
Propogation : Propagating a Cypress is not easy and requires expert skill. It can be propagated by grafting a young branch on a root cutting. But, it’s a better idea to buy it from a nursery.

Common Problems

Why are the needles/fronds of my Cypress browning?
The Cypress needs constant watering and a continuously moist soil. Long periods of dry soil leads to browning of the foliage. While young cypress trees need regular watering, established plants (more than 3 years) are comparatively more drought tolerant.
What pests attack cypress plants?
While plenty of sun and good air circulation keeps the pests at bay in cypress plants, they are sometimes attacked by aphids, bagworms, or scales.
Why is my cypress tree leaf colour changing?
It is normal for the leaves of cypress to become lighter, more golden than green, in summer months due to exposure to optimal amounts of sunlight (6 - 8 hours). The concern arises when the leaves start turning brown, it’s a classic sign of dehydration.

Style and Decor

Light Requirements :The cypress loves full and bright sun (at least 4 - 5 hours) and a moist soil for good growth. It also does well in dappled shade or extremely bright indirect light.
Locations :Given its love for bright direct light, the cypress makes a great addition to patios, balconies, and windowsills. It is a perfect fit for any sunny corner of your home. Living rooms, bedrooms, balconies, patios, windowsills of West or South facing windows are great locations for your plant.
Styling/decor tip :A great choice to add some bright golden green to your space and to create a much needed privacy barrier from your intrusive neighbours. Excellent for balconies or patios, they can be pruned to any shape you desire. They are great fits for corners due to their natural conical shape and add the much needed height to any plant arrangement. Pair it with tall planters to further elevate the tall look and make it more premium. It looks the best in floor planters. If you have an aisle way that receives sun, add it to the corners for a patch of green that does not take much space. It’s also great for living spaces as it adds a faint lemony smell to the room.
