About the Big Leaf Fittonia Plant

The perfect houseplant, the fittonia hybrid is a delicately veined evergreen plant that has larger leaves than its more common counterpart. The fittonia spreads with abandon and grows to a height of 3-6 inches making it an excellent choice for tabletops and hanging planters. The larger leaves of this hybrid are excellent to show the silvery venations. The fittonia loves humidity and droops to alert you to its needs and springs right back after a good drink - earning it the name 'drama queen'.

All the plant gossip, through the grapevine. Pun intended

Plants growing in containers need more fertilizing than those in the ground. The more you water, the more quickly you flush the nutrients out of the soil.

Plant Essentials

Fertilizer/ feed for the plant:Feed your fittonia every three weeks with a generic indoor plant organic fertiliser (Plan-T-onic) to see it thrive. Make sure to prune away the dead foliage.
Repotting : Repot the plant once in a year when it outgrows its current pot. It’s a creeper so give it a pot that is more wide than tall.
Propogation : It’s an extremely easy plant to propagate. Take stem cuttings (2-3 inches) and remove the lowest leaves to expose leaf nodes. Put the cuttings in water such that the exposed leaf nodes are under water. Pot it in soil once healthy root system develops.

Common Problems

1. Why is my fittonia drooping?
Fittonia loves humidity and moisture and needs the soil to be moist at all times, not soggy. A fittonia indicates moisture levels below its liking by drooping immediately and you need to water it immediately.
2. Why are the leaves of my fittonia browning?
Browning of leaf edges can be either die to underwatering or due to too much light resulting in leaf burn. Check and remedy the condition.
3. What soil is best for repotting fittonia?
Repot your fittonia in a well-draining mix of soil, cocopeat, and perlite to allow its roots to grow quickly. It’s a creeper with shallow root system and heavy soil inhibits its growth.
