How to grow Kapur Tulsi Plant:

Botanical Name: Ocimum kilimandscharicum

Common Name: Camphor basil.

Family: Lamiaceae (Mint family)

Description: Kapur Tulsi is an erect, branching, aromatic herb. Leaves have a very pleasing aroma of Camphor. Leaf oil contains around 60-80 % camphor in it. This plant can be grown alongside other types of Tulsi.

Planting Season: Throughout the year.

Climate: Kapur Tulsi can tolerate a wide range of climatic conditions.

Soil: Rich, loamy, well-drained garden soil with a right amount of humus.

Location: Outdoors, semi-outdoors, windowsills, balcony.

Planting: Plant Kapur Tulsi in a regular 8-10 inch round pots with a height of minimum 1 feet.

Sunlight: Full sun (6-8 hours) or partial sun (3-4 hours)

Watering: Plant requires regular, moderate watering. A potted plant can be watered every alternate day by watering can.

Manuring: Add plenty of cow manure or compost in potting soil at the time of planting. Mix handful of organic manure every month in potting soil.

Plant protection: If grown in open sunny location, this plant does not catch any pests or diseases.

Propagation: Plant is grown by seed sowing. Seeds can be collected from dried flowering inflorescence that appears on top. New plants can also be grown by stem cuttings of the old plant.

Harvesting: Keep pinching off the leaves from the top. You will get a regular supply of herb and also because of this practice the plant will attain bushy form.

Medicinal properties: Plant—spasmolytic, antibacterial. Decamphorized oil— insecticidal, mosquito repellent.

Plant part used: Whole plant, mainly leaves.

Chemical constituents: The plant contains a large number of alkaloids, & withanolides (0.13- 0.68 %), which are therapeutically important.

How to use: (Consult with your family physician before using)
  • Herbal tea: Leaves are added to herbal tea along with lemongrass and ginger. Cold beverages are also made with Kapur tulsi leaves.
  • A paste of leaves along with black pepper, Tulsi and black salt is given to people with chronic coughing problem.
  • Whole leaves taste very good in a salad. Regular consumption of leaves helps keep the health stress free.
  • Leaves are added in steam vaporizers for cold, cough, choked up nose.
  • Leaves are added in bathing water for germ-free skin.
