Sowing
- Scatter seeds lightly on the soil surface and cover with a very thin layer of fine soil. Seeds are tiny, so mix them with a little sand for even spreading.
- We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to July, when the weather is warm.
- Keep in a bright spot and maintain good moisture.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 3-5 days.
- Keep soil moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, thin to 10-15 cm apart and move to direct sun. Eat the thinned seedlings as microgreens.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 5-6 hours daily.
- Water with a gentle spray daily. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Use a wide, shallow pot (at least 15 cm deep) with drainage holes.
- Space plants 10-15 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Once a flower spike appears, leaves turn tough. Harvest everything right away.
- Sow fresh batches every 2-3 weeks for a continuous supply.
- Cook fresh greens within a day or two for the best flavour.
Harvesting
- Leaves are ready in 25-30 days.
- Cut the top 10-15 cm of growth; the plant branches out and regrows.
- You can also pull whole young plants for bhaji.
- Harvest regularly for 2-3 cuttings before the plant flowers.

Frequently asked questions
What is Amaranth seed good for?
Amaranth is a gluten-free, low-calorie superfood packed with protein, fiber, calcium, vitamins, and minerals like zinc, iron, and vitamin C. Add cooked Amaranth to soups, salads, smoothies, and porridges for extra flavor, or use Amaranth flour to make gluten-free bread, pasta, and baked treats.
Is Amaranth easy to grow from seed?
Yes! Amaranth is a fast-growing summer crop best sown from mid-spring to early summer. It thrives in warm climates, well-drained fertile soil, and needs at least six hours of sunlight. Keep the soil moist and provide about an inch of water per week for optimal growth.
What is the growth period of Amaranth?
When growing Amaranth for its leaves or seeds, the variety and growing conditions are key factors to consider. You can start picking the young leaves about 3 to 4 weeks after sowing, and regular harvesting will promote new growth. For seed harvesting, wait until the flowers have dried and turned brown, which usually occurs 6 to 8 weeks after planting. It’s important to ensure that the plant is fully mature and flowering before you harvest the grains!
How long do Amaranth seeds take to germinate?
Amaranth seeds take 5-14 days to germinate, with soil temperature playing a key role. For faster germination, maintain a soil temperature of 20-25°C. Sow the seeds 1/8 inch deep and keep the soil moist until they sprout. Harvest when the seeds begin to fall from the cluster.
