    Product Details

Brinjal Kateri is a small, round variety with deep flavour that is a favourite in traditional Indian cooking. Compact, productive, and perfect for bharwa baingan and regional curries.

    • Small, round, deep purple fruits with intense, rich flavour.
    • Rich in fibre, antioxidants, and vitamin B6.
    • The preferred variety for bharwa baingan, Rajasthani curries, and sambar.
    • Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, chemical-free baingan all season long.
    Sowing
    • Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in a seedling tray.
    • Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
    • Best time to sow: February to March, or June to July.
    • Keep it in a warm, dark spot and maintain good humidity. Cover the top if needed.
    Germination
    • Seeds sprout in 7–10 days.
    • Keep soil moist during this period.
    • Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.
    Transplanting
    • Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 4–5 true leaves, usually after 25–30 days.
    • Transplant into a large pot or grow bag (at least 40 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
    • Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day to reduce transplant shock.
    • Water well after transplanting and keep in partial shade for 2–3 days before moving to full sun.
    Growing
    • Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
    • Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging.
    • Use a large pot or grow bag with drainage holes.
    • Space plants 60–75 cm apart.
    • Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
    • Kateri brinjal is a bushy, compact plant. Light pruning of the upper tips encourages more branching and heavier fruiting.
    Aftercare & Post-Harvest
    • Do not let fruits overmature on the plant. They turn seedy and reduce further fruiting.
    • A well-maintained Kateri Brinjal plant can produce for 4–6 months.
    • Once productivity drops, pull the plant out and sow fresh for the next season.
    • The plant may slow down in very hot or very cold conditions; resume care when temperatures stabilise.
    Harvesting
    • Fruits are ready in 70–85 days from transplanting.
    • Harvest when fruits are firm, shiny, and have reached their full colour. Do not wait until the skin turns dull.
    • Cut with a bit of stem using a sharp knife.
    • Pick regularly; the plant produces continuously over several months when harvested frequently.

    Frequently asked questions

Do Brinjal Kateri need a lot of water?

Brinjal Kateri loves moist soil but hates waterlogging! Water it 2-3 times a week, keeping the soil slightly damp but not soggy. In hot summers, increase watering, but always let the topsoil dry a bit between waterings. Remember, balance is key! Deep, consistent hydration = happy, high-yielding brinjals!

Which month is best to plant Brinjal kateri?

Brinjal Kateri seeds grow best in warm temperatures (25-35°C), so the ideal planting months are January-March for summer crops and June-July for monsoon planting. Does your region have milder temperatures year-round? Then you can also plant between September and November. Just give them plenty of sunshine, and they'll thrive wonderfully!

How long does it take for Brinjal Kateri seeds to germinate and produce fruit?

Ugaoo's Brinjal Kateri seeds usually need only 7-14 days to germinate, given warm temperatures (25-30°C) and moist soil. The plant starts flowering in 45-60 days, and you can expect your first harvest in 35-40 days after sowing. With proper care, your Kateri plant can keep producing delicious brinjals for months!

    Can Brinjal grow without sunlight?

No! Brinjals are diehard sun-lovers! Brinjal Kateri seeds need at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily to grow strong and produce plenty of fruits. Without sunlight, your Kateri plant will become weak and leggy, with poor fruiting. So, pick the sunniest spot in your garden or balcony, and let those brinjals soak up the sunshine!
