Delonix Regia (Gulmohar) is India's most beloved and recognisable flowering tree. Its vivid red-orange canopy in summer is one of the most spectacular natural displays in the country.

Fast-growing once established in warm Indian conditions.
Provides generous shade and a stunning annual display from April to June.
Extremely drought tolerant and perfectly suited to the Indian summer.

Sowing

Scrape seeds: nick the hard coat with a file and soak in warm water for 24-48 hours. This dramatically improves germination.
Sow 2-3 cm deep in a large nursery pot or bag. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix mixed with garden soil.
Best time to sow: March to June, when temperatures are warm.
Keep in a warm, bright spot with consistent moisture.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 5-15 days after scarification and soaking.
Keep soil warm and moist during this period.
Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.

Transplanting

Transplant once the seedling reaches 30-50 cm.
Handle the taproot gently to avoid damage.
Plant in open ground or very large containers for the best results.

Growing

Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water regularly when young. Once established, Gulmohar is highly drought tolerant.
Feed with cow manure every 20 days in year one.
We suggest Ugaoo's Neem Oil Spray for pests on young seedlings.
Plan for a large tree; Gulmohar can spread 10-15 metres wide.

Aftercare & Post-Harvest

Water consistently in the first 2 years for root establishment.
Once established, it is largely self-sufficient and handles Indian conditions beautifully.
Light pruning after flowering maintains a good canopy shape.

Harvesting

Flowering begins 3-5 years from seed; full display from year 5-7.
Seed pods dry on the tree after flowering; collect and store for re-sowing.
