In Southeast Asian countries, there have been depictions of this flower since as early as the 9th century which show us that they have been considered sacred since then.

In some Pacific islands such as Tahiti, Fiji, and Hawaii, Plumeria flowers are also used to depict the marital or relationship status of women. If the flowers are worn over the right ear, the woman is said to be seeking a relationship and she is said to be committed if she wears it over the left ear.

• Taking Care of Plumeria Plants

Knowing how to care for Plumeria plants is essential because with the right kind of care and nurturing, they can grow to their fullest potential and produce flowers that hold very high cultural significance in our country.

There are a few things that you must keep in mind when growing a Frangipani plant:

1. Sunlight:

Frangipani plants love bright, full sunlight. To make sure they grow well, you will have to ensure that they are placed in a position where receive at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

2. Soil:

While Plumeria plants can adapt to many types of soils, they prefer well-draining soil and it is crucial to their development. A mixture of potting soil and perlite or sand works well.

3. Watering:

Watering is important, no doubt. But you have to let the soil sit and dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so water sparingly and adjust based on the climate.

4. Temperature:

These plants prefer warm temperatures and are not cold-tolerant. If grown in colder climates, consider bringing your frangipani plumeria plant indoors during winter.

5. Propagation:

Frangipani can very easily be propagated through cuttings or seeds. Plant cuttings in well-draining soil, and seeds can be germinated in a warm, moist environment.

6. Pruning:

Regular pruning helps maintain the shape of the plant and encourages more blooms.

• How to Grow Frangipani from Seeds

Champa

If you choose to grow a Plumeria plant from its seeds, while the process will be longer, it will definitely be more rewarding.

These are some basic materials you will require to ensure optimal growth and development of your Champa seeds:

a. Champa (Frangipani) Seeds:

Obtain fresh seeds from a mature Champa plant. You can usually find them in the pods that develop after the flowers fall.

e. Plastic Wrap or a Clear Plastic Dome:

To create a humid environment for germination.

Once you have acquired all the material, how do you go about it? These are a few steps you can start with:

f. Seed Collection:

Collect seeds from mature Champa pods. Allow the pods to dry, and gently extract the seeds.

g. Preparing the Frangipani Seeds:

Soak the Plumeria seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours. This helps soften the seed coat and enhances germination. Make sure to drain out the water after 24 hours.

h. Find and Use the Right Potting Mix:

Fill a seed tray or pots with the well-draining potting mix. Water the mix thoroughly before planting. However, you need to remember that overwatering is one of the leading causes of plant death which is why you need to be cautious while watering.

i. Plant Your Seeds:

Plant the soaked seeds about 1 inch deep in the potting mix. Space them apart at least 2-3 inches to give each seedling room to grow.Champa Flowers

j. Water Adequately:

Water the seeds lightly after planting. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Overwatering can lead to rot.

k. Create Humidity:

Cover the pot with plastic wrap or place it in a plastic bag to create a humid environment. This mimics the conditions of a greenhouse and aids germination.

l. Placement:

Place the pot in a warm and bright location. Frangipani seeds require adequate warmth to germinate successfully.

m. Germination:

Germination can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. Getting your seeds to germinate can be a tiring yet rewarding process that will require a lor of patience and care.

Once the seedlings have developed, remove the plastic covering.

n. Transplanting:

When your seedlings have grown a few inches tall and have developed several leaves, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden if the climate is suitable.

o. Care:

Continue to provide adequate sunlight, well-draining soil, and occasional fertilizer to support the growth of your Champa plant.

p. Patience:

Champa plants are known for their slow growth, especially when grown from seeds. Be patient, and over time, you will reap what you sowed.
