●Benefits of Growing Artichoke in Your Home Garden
Artichoke seeds are relatively easy to understand but they can be a little tricky to grow, especially since they are generally not acclimated to the Indian climate. However, once you get the hang of it, the process is a breeze and is more rewarding than you’d have anticipated! Here are some reasons why you will love to grow your own artichoke plant:
1. Nutrient-rich and Healthy
This is a benefit known and accepted by all because artichokes have, time and again, proven their worth as a health food. These nutrient-dense vegetables are packed with essential nutrients like fiber, vitamins C and K, magnesium, and antioxidants. They have been known to promote heart health, improve digestion, and support a healthy immune system.
Growing artichokes in the comfort of your own home garden give you fresh, organic produce that’s highly beneficial for you and your loved ones.
2. Perennial Plant with Longevity
Artichoke plants are perennials, meaning they will continue to be your organic produce for several years once established. This makes them a sustainable and very rewarding crop to grow, providing a steady harvest needing minimal replanting.3. Aesthetic Appeal
Yes, the plant is super beneficial and produces wonderful vegetables. But did you know that it is also a great looker? The artichoke plant is actually quite attractive with its large, spiny leaves and vibrant, edible flower buds.Essentially, it adds a unique and ornamental touch to any garden, serving both as a functional food source and a decorative plant.
4. Environmental Benefits
By having the artichoke plant growing in your garden, you also reduce the carbon footprint associated with food transport and packaging. You can control the use of fertilizers and pesticides, promoting healthier soil and a more eco-friendly gardening practice.●Cultivating Artichokes from Seeds: When to Sow and When to Harvest?
When growing seeds, always remember that their planting depth depends largely on their size. The smaller the seed, the less deep it needs to be planted because if it is sown too deep, it will not get the chance to germinate. So, sow your artichoke seeds at a depth of around 4mm. When starting them indoors, remember to plant your seeds 8-10 weeks before the winter season is about to end. However, when starting them outdoors, the best time to do so is during the months of November and December. This is because artichoke germination needs cooler weather and harsher conditions to be successful.
Ideally, they need temperatures between 10-20°C and they will begin to germinate within 8-20 days after being sown. Once successfully planted, remember to provide your seeds with enough sunlight everyday - at least 6 hours a day.
Your artichoke plant should be good to harvest after 80-100 days of transplantation of the seedlings. The right time to harvest is when the buds are the size of a golf ball. But remember, it needs to be done before they begin to open!
