Sowing
- Surface sow seeds in a seedling tray and press lightly. Don't cover; they need light to germinate.
- Seeds are very fine, so mix them with a little sand for even spreading. We suggest Ugaoo's Potting Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: September to November.
- During this time, keep in a bright spot with indirect light and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 7-10 days.
- Keep soil moist; mist gently rather than pouring water.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct morning sun.
Growing
- Needs 5-6 hours of direct sun daily. Light afternoon shade is fine.
- Water at the base when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid wetting the flowers.
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Space plants 15-20 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Ageratum declines as temperatures rise from March.
- If the plant turns leggy, trim it back by a third to encourage fresh growth.
- Once flowering stops, pull the plant out and refresh the soil.
- Sow fresh seeds next September for another season of blooms.
Harvesting
- Flowers bloom in 60-75 days.
- Deadhead faded clusters regularly to keep the plant tidy and flowering.
- Cut stems in the morning for small posies and table arrangements.
- A healthy plant flowers for 8-10 weeks.
