    Product Details

White Onion (Safed Pyaz) has a milder, crisper flavour than red onions and is deeply embedded in many regional Indian cuisines. Patient to grow but deeply rewarding when you pull your own bulbs.

    • Mild, crisp white bulbs with a less pungent flavour; great raw and cooked.
    • Rich in vitamin C, fibre, quercetin, and antioxidants.
    • A kitchen staple in many Indian regional cuisines.
    • Grow it organically with Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, chemical-free safed pyaz all season long.
    Sowing
    • Sow seeds 1 cm deep in a seedling tray. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
    • Best time to sow: October to November, at the start of the cool season.
    • During this time, keep in a bright spot and maintain good humidity. Onion seeds can be slow to germinate; patience is needed.
    Germination
    • Seeds sprout in 10-14 days.
    • Keep soil moist during this period.
    • Move to a bright spot with direct morning sun. Let seedlings grow to 15-20 cm before transplanting.
    Transplanting
    • Seedlings are ready to transplant when 15-20 cm tall with a pencil-thick stem, usually after 40-50 days.
    • Transplant into a deep pot or grow bag (at least 30 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
    • Trim tops by one third before transplanting to reduce shock.
    • Transplant in the evening and space plants 10-15 cm apart.
    Growing
    • Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
    • Water when the topsoil feels dry. Consistent moisture without waterlogging gives the best bulbs.
    • Use a deep pot or grow bag with good drainage.
    • Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
    • When leaves begin to fall over naturally, stop watering. The bulb is maturing.
    Aftercare & Post-Harvest
    • Curing is essential; uncured onions rot quickly.
    • Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot in mesh bags after curing.
    • Onions don't regrow after harvest. Sow fresh seeds the following October.
    • If a flower stalk forms, harvest immediately.
    Harvesting
    • Bulbs are ready in 120-150 days.
    • Harvest when the tops fall over and the neck of the plant softens naturally.
    • Loosen soil first, then pull bulbs carefully.
    • Cure harvested bulbs in a dry, airy spot for 2-3 weeks before storing.

    Frequently asked questions

How long do white onions take to grow from seed?

White onions typically take about 100–120 days to grow from seed to harvest. Start them indoors in early spring, then transplant when the weather warms up. Give them full sun, well-draining soil, and regular watering, and in a few months, you'll be harvesting crisp, white onions straight from your garden!

Which is better onion seeds or bulbs?

Both onion seeds and bulbs have their perks! Seeds are great if you're looking to grow a variety of onions and have time to nurture them from scratch. Bulbs, on the other hand, give you a quicker harvest (usually in 2-3 months) and are perfect for beginners. It depends on whether you want a fun, patient journey that a lot of gardeners love or a faster crop and harvest!

How long do onion seeds take to germinate?

Onion seeds usually take about 7-10 days to germinate. Keep the soil warm (around 20-25°C), lightly moist, and in a sunny spot, and you’ll soon see those tiny green sprouts popping up. Once they’re a little bigger, they’ll be ready to grow into delicious onions! The average harvest time for these onions is around 3-4 months. So, it's not a very long wait!

In which month onion seeds are sown?

White onion seeds are best sown in early spring, around February to March in India. This gives them enough time to grow before the heat sets in. For cooler regions, you can start them indoors and transplant the seedlings once the weather warms up. Get ready for a flavorful harvest in just 3-4 months!
