Peeling garlic: 10-second challenge
Whether you’re cooking an elaborate dinner or a simple meal for one, leaving behind a messy kitchen will always be in the back of your mind. This is especially problematic if you have to peel garlic. Yes, it adds tremendous amounts of flavor, but it often takes a lot of effort to peel garlic and so we may end up not using it in the first place.
But we’re to tell you that you need resort to garlic-less food no more! There are some simple yet effective ways to peel garlic quickly and efficiently so that you don’t leave a mess and it doesn’t get up all in your fingernails. That’s right; you don’t need to “dig deep” to peel those garlic cloves, and you don’t need any fancy equipment either. You just need a flat surface (palm of your hand, flat side of a knife) and two bowls.
First, lay down your (whole) garlic on a flat surface like your kitchen table or a cutting board. Then, crush it as flat as you can with the heel of your hand. Try bringing your hand down from a higher level. If your hand is too sensitive or you have some allergy issues, then you can use the side of a chef’s knife or the flat bottom of the bowl.
Once the garlic is crushed, sweep all the contents into the bowl. If you can, use a slightly bigger bowl here, about the size of a salad mixing bowl. Then, take your second bowl (it should be of the same size as the first) and cover the first bowl’s opening so that there are no cracks.
Now comes the fun part! Simply shake the container as hard as you can. You should be able to hear the garlic cloves rattling around inside. Do that for about 15 to 20 seconds. Eventually, the cloves will have just separated out by themselves, and you would’ve saved your fingernails, and you hands some icky, smelly grief.
You don’t need to stick to a single garlic for this either. Once you crush them individually, you collectively sweep them into your bowl and then shake it a bit harder. This will save you quite a bit of time, and you can simply just get on with the cooking! You can also learn about How to grow garlic from the book called Kanda Lehsun.
