Product Details

This flowering tree native to Australia is commonly called hikory wattle or forest mangrove. Due to its intensive root system it is used to restore degraded land, improve soil water content and fix soil nitrogen and carbon levels. Its heartwood, owing to its sturdy non-warping quality and smooth finish is used for making floor tiles and furniture.

Sowing

Pre-treat seeds before sowing: pour hot water (just off the boil) over them and leave to soak overnight. This softens the hard coat and is essential for good germination.
Sow 1 cm deep in nursery bags or pots. Mixing Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix with garden soil gives seedlings a strong start.
Best time to sow: March to June, so seedlings are ready to plant out with the monsoon.
Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain consistent moisture.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 7-15 days after hot water treatment.
Keep soil moist during this period.
Once sprouts appear, move to full sun.

Growing

Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water regularly in the first year. Once established, it is hardy and fast-growing.
Plant 2-3 metres apart in plantations or windbreaks.
Feed with cow manure every 30 days in the first year.
Protect young plants from grazing animals.
Plan for its size; it can reach 15-25 metres at maturity.

Acacia Mangium is a perennial tree that needs very little care once established.
Water during long dry spells in the first 2 years.
It seeds and spreads easily; keep an eye on volunteer seedlings nearby.
Avoid planting close to buildings, walls, or pipelines.

Harvesting

Poles and pulpwood can be harvested in 6-8 years in plantation settings.
Prune lower branches in the early years for straighter, cleaner trunks.
Fallen leaves add organic matter and improve the soil around it.
