Sowing
- Scatter seeds lightly on the soil surface in a pot or directly in a garden bed. Don't cover - they need light.
- Mix seeds with a little sand for more even spreading. We suggest Ugaoo's Potting Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: October to November, at the start of the cool season.
- During this time, mist gently with water so seeds don't wash away.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 5–10 days. Alyssum is a quick and reliable germinator.
- Keep soil surface moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, thin lightly and move to a bright spot.
Transplanting
NA - Alyssum is best direct sown. It doesn't transplant well once established.
Growing
- Needs 4–6 hours of sunlight daily. Tolerates partial shade well.
- Water when the topsoil feels dry. Don't overwater.
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Thin or space plants to 15–20 cm apart once sprouted.
- Feed lightly every 25 days. Alyssum doesn't need heavy feeding.
- Use neem cake and neem oil spray if any pests appear.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Alyssum declines as temperatures rise from February.
- Once flowering stops and the plant looks spent, pull it out.
- Allow some plants to set seed - alyssum self-seeds easily and may come back next season.
- Sow fresh seeds again the following October.
Harvesting
- Flowers bloom in 40–60 days - one of the fastest winter flowers.
- No deadheading strictly required, the plant self-cleans well.
- Cut back by one third if growth becomes leggy - it triggers a fresh flush of blooms.
