Sowing
- Surface sow seeds in a seedling tray and press them lightly into the soil. Don't cover; they need light to germinate.
- Seeds are very fine, so mix them with a little sand for even spreading. We suggest Ugaoo's Potting Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: September to November, as the weather cools.
- During this time, keep in a bright spot with indirect light and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 10-14 days.
- Keep soil moist; mist gently rather than pouring water, so seeds don't wash away.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct morning sun.
Growing
- Needs 5-6 hours of direct sun daily.
- Water at the base when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid wetting the leaves to prevent fungal issues.
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Pinch the growing tip once the plant has 4-6 leaves; it branches out and gives more spikes.
- Stake taller varieties so spikes stay straight.
- Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Snapdragons decline as temperatures rise from March.
- Reduced flowering and weaker stems signal the plant is nearing the end of its cycle.
- Once flowering stops, pull the plant out.
- Let a few spikes dry on the plant and collect the seeds for next season.
Harvesting
- Flowers bloom in 90-110 days from sowing.
- Cut spikes in the morning when the lower third of the flowers have opened, for the longest vase life.
- Deadhead spent spikes regularly to encourage side shoots and more blooms.
- A healthy plant keeps flowering for 6-8 weeks.
