Did you know that artichokes are a type of thistle? This means that artichokes are actually flowers now deemed edible as vegetables, making for delicious additions to nutritious meals. Today, these vegetables are known to be among the most in-demand ones worldwide due to their nutritional value and many health benefits. Additionally, artichoke seeds are readily available, making growing artichokes a very realistic dream for many! They grow well when treated right and will even reward you with wonderful vegetables regularly, saving you a lot of money and effort that you might have otherwise spent on bringing home the right produce commercially.
Sowing
- Soak seeds in water for 12 hours before sowing.
- Sow 1 cm deep in a seedling tray. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: September to October, so plants grow through the cool months.
- Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 10-20 days.
- Keep soil moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly and deeply. Avoid waterlogging.
- Use a very large pot or plant in the ground; plants grow 1-1.5 metres wide.
- Space plants 90-120 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
- Artichoke prefers mild, cool weather. It does best in hills and cooler regions; in the hot plains, grow it through winter.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Once scales open, buds turn tough and inedible; leave a few to bloom into purple flowers.
- Rising heat from April slows production.
- In cooler regions, cut the plant back to the base after harvest; it can regrow the next season.
- In hot plains, treat it as a one-season crop and sow fresh in September.
Harvesting
- Buds are ready in 150-180 days from sowing.
- Harvest when the main bud is firm, tight, and about the size of a tennis ball, before the scales start to open.
- Cut with 5-8 cm of stem using a sharp knife.
- Smaller side buds follow after the main harvest; pick them when firm.
