Product Details
Known to be a flowering plant that is often used as a vegetable due to its nutrient-dense stalks, asparagus is a rather easy-growing plant. Asparagus seeds are easy to grow and require relatively less gardening experience. However, one thing they do need is patience and a little bit of your time. With the right care, the seeds can germinate between 15-30 days and their fruits will tell you when to harvest the vegetables according to their colors once ripe.
Approx. seeds per gram: 19
Sowing
- Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the hard coat.
- Sow 1-1.5 cm deep in a seedling tray or nursery pot. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to March, or September to October.
- Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 14-21 days. Asparagus is slow to germinate, so patience is needed.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water when the topsoil feels dry. Asparagus hates soggy roots.
- Use a deep pot or raised bed with drainage holes.
- Space plants 30-45 cm apart.
- Let the plant grow freely in the first year; the ferny leaves builds strong roots.
- Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- After the harvest window, let the spears grow into ferny foliage; this feeds the roots for next season.
- Cut the leaves back once it turns yellow and dry.
- Top up the pot with compost and cow manure each year.
- Asparagus prefers cooler weather; in hot plains, expect thinner spears and a shorter season.
Harvesting
- Don't harvest in the first year; let the plant build its roots.
- From the second year, harvest spears for 3-4 weeks when they are 15-20 cm tall with tight tips.
- From the third year, you can harvest for 6-8 weeks each season.
- Cut or snap spears at soil level.
