Product Details
Balsam Mix is a colourful, easy-to-grow flowering plant. It's known for thriving even in monsoon humidity. A cheerful choice for Indian gardens.
- Produces dense, rose-like double blooms in pink, red, purple, and white
- One of the few flowering annuals that grows beautifully through the monsoon
- Great for borders, pots, garden beds, and shaded balconies
- Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Potting Mix, chemical-free blooms all season long
Number of seeds per gram (aprox): 174
Sowing
- Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep directly in the pot. Use Ugaoo's Pot-o-Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to March.
- During this time, keep it in a low light and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 6–10 days.
- Keep the soil moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a spot with bright light.
Transplanting
- Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 2–3 true leaves, usually after 15–20 days.
- Transplant into a pot or garden bed (at least 15-20cm deep) in well draining soil.
- Do it in the evening or on a cloudy day to reduce transplant shock.
- Water well immediately after transplanting and keep in partial shade for 1–2 days before moving to full sun.
Growing
- Needs partial sun to bright, indirect light; too much harsh direct sun can burn the leaves.
- Water regularly, keeping soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Soil should be well-draining.
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Space plants 20–25 cm apart, rows 25–30 cm apart.
- Feed with Ugaoo's cow manure every 20–25 days. Use Ugaoo's neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
- Pinch off the growing tip early on to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Don't let dried flowers sit too long on the plant. Remove dried flowers promptly to redirect energy into new blooms.
- Balsam self-seeds easily; fallen seed pods can sprout new plants nearby on their own.
- Reduced flowering and weaker stems signal the plant is nearing the end of its cycle.
- Once flowering slows down significantly, pull the plant out and sow fresh for the next season.
Harvesting
- Flowers are ready for harvest/blooming in 45–55 days.
- Cut flowers in the cool morning hours for the best vase life, snipping just above a leaf node.
- A healthy plant can keep flowering continuously for 2–3 months.

Frequently asked questions
Which month to sow Balsam seeds?
Balsam seeds love the warm weather! So, the best time to sow them in India is from February to March for summer blooms and June to July for monsoon blooms. These cheerful, easy-growers thrive in moist soil and bright light. Just sprinkle the seeds onto a well-draining medium like Coco Peat, keep them happy with water, and you'll have a garden bursting with vibrant, cup-shaped flowers in just 60 days!
What is the use of Balsam seeds?
Balsam seeds are tiny powerhouses! They’re used to grow stunning, easy-care flowers that add a pop of color to gardens and balconies. Traditionally, Balsam plants have also been valued in herbal remedies for their antibacterial properties. Plus, collecting and replanting their seeds lets you enjoy their beauty year after year— it's like nature’s own gift that keeps on giving!
Can you eat Balsam seeds?
Surprisingly, yes! Balsam seeds are edible and have been traditionally used in some cultures. They have a mild, nutty taste and are sometimes sprinkled on food. However, not all parts of the plant are safe to eat, so it’s best to enjoy these flowers for their beauty rather than as a snack—unless you're sure of the variety!
Can Balsam grow in water?
Not quite! Balsam loves moisture but needs soil to thrive. While it enjoys damp conditions, especially during germination, its roots require well-draining, nutrient-rich soil to grow strong. For this, you can use Ugaoo's Pot-O-Mix, a perfect blend of 11 essential ingredients that will ensure excellent growth for your flower plants. Remember -- too much water can cause root rot. So, plant your Balsam in soil, keep it hydrated (but not soggy!), and watch it reward you with its gorgeous blooms!
