Sowing
- Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the hard coat.
- Sow 1.5-2 cm deep directly in a large pot or grow bag. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to March, or June to July.
- Keep in a warm spot and maintain good moisture.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 7-10 days.
- Keep soil warm and moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Avoid waterlogging.
- Use a large pot or grow bag (at least 30 cm deep) with drainage holes.
- Provide a trellis, net, or railing for the vines to climb.
- If fruit set is low, hand pollinate by transferring pollen from male to female flowers in the morning.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Don't let fruits sit too long on the vine. They turn yellow-orange, soft, and seedy.
- Reduced flowering and smaller fruits signal the vine is nearing the end of its cycle.
- Heavy monsoon rain can cause fungal issues; ensure good drainage and airflow.
- Once production stops, pull the vine out and sow fresh next season.
Harvesting
- Fruits are ready in 55-65 days.
- Harvest when fruits are firm, dark green, and 15-20 cm long.
- Cut with a sharp knife or scissors, leaving a little stem attached.
- Pick every 2-3 days; regular harvesting keeps new fruits coming.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to eat seeds from gourd?
Yes! Gourd seeds are safe to eat and are packed with nutrients like protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Many varieties, like bottle gourd and pumpkin, have edible seeds that can be roasted for a crunchy snack. However, some wild gourds may have bitter seeds due to natural toxins, so always stick to edible varieties. Snack smart!
Why is my Bitter gourd plant dying?
If your bitter gourd plant is dying, it may be due to overwatering, pests, or nutrient deficiencies. Ensure well-draining soil, water only when the topsoil is dry, and check for pests regularly. Neem oil and organic fertilizers like cow manure can help a lot. With some extra care and lots of love, your plant will bounce back in no time!
Is Karela good for the kidneys?
Yes! Karela (bitter gourd) is great for kidney health. It helps flush out toxins, supports healthy blood sugar levels, and may even help prevent kidney stones due to its detoxifying properties. Plus, its antioxidant-rich juice is known to promote overall kidney function. Just remember: moderation is key! Too much of it can lower blood sugar excessively. Stay balanced and enjoy the benefits!
What is the life span of Bitter gourd plant?
Bitter gourd is a short-lived climber, typically thriving for 4 to 5 months. It grows fast, flowers within 30-40 days, and produces fruits for a few months before completing its life cycle of around 115 days. With proper care—good soil, sunlight, and regular pruning—you can even extend its productivity for a more fruitful harvest!
