Product Details
Nantes Improved is a classic, reliable carrot variety beloved for its sweet flavour, cylindrical shape, and nearly coreless tender flesh. A perfect cool-season crop for Indian home gardens.
- Sweet, cylindrical, nearly coreless roots with a mild, tender flavour.
- Rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A, fibre, and antioxidants.
- One of the most reliable carrot varieties for home gardens and containers.
- Grow it organically with Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, fresh gajar all winter long.
Approx. seeds per gram: 400
Sowing
- Sow seeds 0.5-1 cm deep directly in a deep pot. Carrots must be direct sown; transplanting causes forked, deformed roots.
- Loosen the soil deeply before sowing. Compact soil causes stubby or forked roots.
- We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: October to January, in the cool season.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 10-14 days. Carrot seeds are fine; keep soil consistently moist throughout.
- Once sprouts appear, thin seedlings to 5-8 cm apart.
- Move to a bright spot with direct or morning sun.
Transplanting
NA - Carrots must be direct sown. Transplanting causes forked, deformed roots.
Growing
- Needs 5-6 hours of sunlight daily.
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Irregular watering causes roots to crack.
- Use a deep pot (at least 35 cm deep) with drainage holes.
- Space plants 5-8 cm apart, rows 20-25 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Avoid high-nitrogen fertiliser; it promotes leaves over roots.
- Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Carrots don't regrow after harvest. Sow fresh batches every 3-4 weeks for a continuous winter supply.
- Rising temperatures from February cause carrots to bolt and turn bitter.
- Once a flower stalk appears, the root is no longer good to eat.
Harvesting
- Roots are ready in 70-80 days.
- Check by brushing soil away from the shoulder. Harvest when roots reach 1.5-2 cm diameter at the top.
- Pull carefully by loosening soil first.
- Harvest before roots become too large; overgrown Nantes lose their sweetness.

Frequently asked questions
Are Nantes carrots good?
Absolutely! Nantes carrots are a gardener’s dream—sweet, crisp, and nearly super versatile. They have a smooth texture, perfect for snacking, juicing, or adding crunch to salads. Plus, they’re super easy to grow and thrive in home gardens. If you love flavorful, juicy carrots, the Nantes variety will not disappoint!
How long does it take for Nantes carrots to germinate?
With good care and the right growing conditions, Carrot Nantes seeds usually take 14-21 days to germinate. They love cool soil, so keep it moist and be gentle—they’re tiny but mighty! If they’re taking their time, don’t worry; good things (and sweet carrots) come to those who wait! You will have a flourishing and bountiful harvest approximately 70-80 days after sowing the seeds!
What month is best to plant carrot seeds?
In India, the best time to plant carrot seeds is October to February when the weather is cool and pleasant. Carrots thrive in temperatures between 10-25°C, so avoid the scorching summer months. For the sweetest, crunchiest harvest, plant them in a well-draining medium like Coco Peat or Ugaoo's Pot-O-Mix and use a mister to keep them consistently moist during their growing period. Happy growing!
Why are my carrot seeds not coming up?
Carrots can be a little fussy if not given the right care! If your Carrot Nantes seeds aren’t sprouting, it could be due to dry soil or if they are buried too deep. Keep the soil consistently moist, sow seeds shallowly, and be patient—they’re slow but worth the wait. A damp and light fabric cover can help lock in moisture and speed up germination!
