Product Details
Celery is a patient, rewarding cool-season herb-vegetable with crisp, aromatic stalks that are well worth the wait. One of the most satisfying crops to grow from seed at home in Indian winters.
- Crisp, aromatic stalks rich in vitamin K, vitamin C, and folate.
- Both stalks and leaves are edible; use in soups, salads, stir-fries, and fresh juices.
- Sow from July onwards for a winter harvest.
- Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil for a healthy, chemical-free harvest.
Approx. seeds per gram: 2295
Sowing
- Sow seeds on the surface of the soil in a seedling tray. Do not cover; they need light to germinate.
- Press gently to ensure seed contact with the soil.
- Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: July to September, ahead of the cool season.
- Keep it in a cool, bright spot. Mist gently to keep the surface moist. Do not let it dry out.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 14–21 days. Celery is slow to germinate; patience is essential.
- Keep soil consistently moist during this period; mist gently every day.
- Once sprouts appear, provide bright indirect light.
Transplanting
- Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 3–4 true leaves, usually after 30–35 days.
- Transplant into a pot (at least 30 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
- Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day to reduce transplant shock.
- Water well after transplanting and keep in partial shade for 2–3 days before moving to its final spot.
Growing
- Needs 4–6 hours of sunlight daily. Partial shade is fine.
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Celery is sensitive to water stress; irregular watering causes hollow stalks.
- Use a pot with drainage holes.
- Space plants 20–25 cm apart, rows 30 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Celery dislikes heat and bolts as temperatures rise from February.
- Once bolting begins, harvest everything immediately as quality drops quickly.
- Pull the plant out after harvest and sow fresh from July the following season.
- Celery does not regrow after the main harvest.
Harvesting
- Stalks are ready for harvest in 90–120 days from transplanting.
- Harvest outer stalks first by cutting at the base, leaving the centre to keep growing.
- For the whole head, cut the plant at the base once it matures.
- Use stalks and leaves fresh for the best flavour.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Indian name for Celery seed?
In India, celery seeds are commonly known as "Ajmod" (अजमोद) or "Randhuni" (রন্ধুনি)" in some regions. They look like tiny wonders but pack a punch with their bold, slightly bitter, and earthy flavor—perfect for spice blends, pickles, and even Ayurvedic remedies!
Are Celery seeds edible?
Absolutely! Celery seeds are tiny but mighty—they’re packed with flavor and great for digestion. Use them in spice blends, soups, pickles, or even herbal teas. Plus, they’re a hit in Ayurvedic remedies, too. So yes, munch away, but in moderation—remember, balance is key!
How do you grow celery from seeds at home?
If you're growing celery from seeds at home, patience is key! Soak your seeds for 12-24 hours for a head start, then sow them ¼ inch deep in moist, well-draining soil. Keep it warm (18-24°C) and mist regularly—these tiny seeds take their time! In 14-21 days, sprouts appear. Once sturdy with at least 2 true leaves, transplant and watch your celery plant grow!
Is Celery Ajwain?
Nope! Celery seeds (Ajmod) and Ajwain (Carom seeds) may look similar, but they’re different! Celery seeds have a mild, earthy flavor, while Ajwain packs a punch with its strong, thyme-like taste. Both are great for digestion, but don’t swap one for the other in recipes—they each have their own magic and distinct tastes!
