Product Details

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) also known as black eyed pea is one of the most important and popular leguminous vegetables. Locally known as chowli, it is cultivated for its long, green pods to be cooked as vegetable or for dry seeds used as pulse. A perfect vegetable for partially shaded windows and balconies of city apartments.

Sowing

Soak seeds in water for 6-8 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
Sow 2-3 cm deep directly in the pot or grow bag. Beans prefer direct sowing. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
Best time to sow: February to March, or June to July.
Keep in a warm spot and maintain good moisture.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 5-8 days.
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during this period.
Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.

Growing

Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging; it causes root rot.
Use a pot or grow bag (at least 25 cm deep) with drainage holes.
Space plants 20-30 cm apart.
Provide a trellis or sticks if the vines start to climb.
Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.

Aftercare & Post-Harvest

Don't let green pods overmature if you want a long harvest; it signals the plant to stop flowering.
Yellowing leaves and fewer flowers mean the plant is nearing the end of its cycle.
Once done, cut the plant at soil level and leave the roots in; they add nitrogen to the soil.
Store dried beans in an airtight jar in a cool, dry place.

Harvesting

Pods are ready in 55-70 days.
For sabzi, harvest pods when they are tender, slim, and snap easily.
For dry lobia beans, leave pods on the plant until they turn dry and papery, then shell.
Pick green pods every 2-3 days to keep the plant producing.
