Product Details
More commonly known as sweet marjoram, a member of the mint family, it is native to the Mediterranean and Western Asia. It has a similar taste profile to oregano but is milder and is used to flavour salads, soups and granish meat dishes. This easy to grow herb is a perennial and loves full sun and a well draining soil.
Sowing
- Sow seeds 0.25 cm deep, barely covered, in a seedling tray. Seeds are tiny; sow sparingly.
- We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: October to March, avoiding peak summer heat.
- During this time, keep in a bright spot with indirect light and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 7-14 days.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct morning sun.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water sparingly, letting the topsoil dry between waterings. Marjoram dislikes wet feet.
- Use a pot with good drainage holes.
- Space plants 20-25 cm apart.
- Feed lightly with cow manure every 25 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Pinch off flower buds to keep leaves coming.
- Dry extra sprigs by hanging them upside down in a shaded, airy spot.
- Marjoram can keep growing for more than a season in mild climates; trim back by half after a big harvest.
- If the plant turns woody and sparse, sow a fresh batch.
Harvesting
- Leaves are ready in 70-90 days.
- Snip stems just above a pair of leaves; the plant becomes bushier.
- Never take more than a third of the plant at once.
- Flavour is strongest just before the plant flowers.
