Mesembryanthemum, or Ice Plant, produces some of the most vivid jewel-bright daisy flowers in the winter garden. They literally sparkle in sunlight and close like clocks at night.

  • Vivid daisy-like flowers in pink, red, orange, yellow, and white with a glittering texture.
  • Flowers that open in bright sun and close at night; one of nature's most charming tricks.
  • Extremely drought tolerant; perfect for sunny, dry spots and containers.
  • Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Potting Mix, dazzling blooms all winter long.

Sowing
  • Scatter seeds lightly on the soil surface - don't cover them. They need light to germinate.
  • Press gently to ensure seed contact with the soil. We suggest Ugaoo's Potting Mix mixed with extra coarse sand for the best drainage.
  • Best time to sow: October to November, at the start of the cool season.
  • During this time, mist gently with water - don't drench. Mesembryanthemum is sensitive to overwatering from the very start.
Germination
  • Seeds sprout in 10–20 days.
  • Keep the soil surface lightly moist; mist gently every 1–2 days.
  • Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.
Transplanting
  • Seedlings can be transplanted once they have 3–4 true leaves, usually after 20–25 days.
  • We suggest transplanting into a shallow, wide pot with Ugaoo's Potting Mix and extra sand.
  • Handle seedlings gently - their roots are delicate.
  • Transplant in the evening to reduce stress.
Growing
  • Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily. More sun means more open flowers.
  • Water sparingly - let soil dry out completely between waterings. It dislikes overwatering.
  • Use a well-draining pot with good drainage holes.
  • Space plants 20–25 cm apart.
  • Feed lightly every 30 days. It doesn't need heavy feeding.
  • Use neem cake and neem oil spray if any pests appear.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
  • Mesembryanthemum is an annual in India. Once temperatures rise, the plant declines naturally.
  • Allow some seed pods to dry on the plant and collect seeds for next year.
  • Sow fresh seeds the following October.
Harvesting
  • Flowers bloom in 60–80 days.
  • The plant flowers naturally - no deadheading strictly required, though removing spent blooms helps.
