Product Details
Commonly known as the rain tree, its a common sight along the roads for its ability to absorb huge quantities of carbon and in gardens for its shade. It has a wide umbrella shaped canopy with pink flowers that provides both shade and nutrient rich fodder to grazing cattles. It is also grown for timber, gum, and uses in folk medicines.
Sowing
- Pre-treat seeds before sowing: nick the hard coat with a nail file, or pour hot water over the seeds and leave to soak overnight.
- Sow 1-2 cm deep in nursery bags or pots. Mixing Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix with garden soil gives seedlings a strong start.
- Best time to sow: March to June, so seedlings are ready for the monsoon.
- Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain consistent moisture.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 5-12 days after pre-treatment.
- Keep soil moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full sun.
Growing
- Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly in the first 1-2 years. Once established, it is very hardy.
- Plant at least 10 metres from buildings, walls, and pipelines; roots and branches spread wide.
- Feed with cow manure every 30 days in the first year.
- Protect young plants from grazing animals.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- A perennial tree that gets grander every year; it can spread 25-30 metres wide.
- Water during long dry spells in the first 2 years.
- Prune lower branches while young to shape the canopy.
- Fallen leaves make excellent mulch and compost.
Harvesting
- Rain Tree is grown for shade and beauty.
- Flowering begins in 4-6 years.
- Long, sweet pods form after flowering and can be collected for re-sowing.
