Growing your own red onions is one of the most satisfying things a home gardener can do. Patient and rewarding, this daily kitchen staple is entirely achievable in pots, grow bags, and raised beds.

  • Deep red bulbs with the sharp, pungent flavour that is the base of every Indian meal.
  • Rich in quercetin, vitamin C, fibre, and powerful antioxidants.
  • A staple in curries, salads, chutneys, and biryanis.
  • Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, chemical-free pyaz all season long.

Approx. seeds per gram: 307

Sowing
  • Sow seeds 1 cm deep in a seedling tray. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
  • Best time to sow: October to November, at the start of the cool season.
  • During this time, keep it in a bright spot and maintain good humidity. Onion seeds can be slow - patience is needed.
Germination
  • Seeds sprout in 10–14 days.
  • Keep soil moist during this period.
  • Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct morning sun and let seedlings grow to 15–20 cm before transplanting.
Transplanting
  • Seedlings are ready to transplant when they are 15–20 cm tall with a pencil-thick stem, usually after 40–50 days.
  • We suggest transplanting into a large, deep pot or grow bag (at least 30 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
  • Trim the tops by one third before transplanting to reduce transplant shock.
  • Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day.
  • Space plants 10–15 cm apart, rows 20–25 cm apart.
Growing
  • Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
  • Water with a gentle spray when the topsoil feels dry. Consistent moisture without waterlogging gives the best bulbs.
  • Use a deep pot or grow bag with good drainage.
  • Space plants 10–15 cm apart, rows 20–25 cm apart.
  • Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
  • Once the leaves begin to fall over naturally, stop watering - it means the bulb is maturing.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
  • Curing is essential. Uncured onions rot quickly.
  • After curing, store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated spot in mesh bags.
  • Onions don't regrow after harvest. Sow fresh seeds the following October.
  • If a flower stalk forms, harvest immediately - bolted onions don't store well.
Harvesting
  • Bulbs are ready in 120–150 days.
  • Harvest when the tops fall over naturally and the neck of the plant softens.
  • Loosen the soil first, then pull bulbs carefully.
  • Lay harvested bulbs in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks to cure before storing. Don't skip this - it makes all the difference to shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

How long do Red onions take to grow from seed?

Red onions take about 90 to 120 days, or roughly 3 to 4 months, to fully mature, depending on the variety and whether you’re growing them from seeds or onion sets. If you’re starting from seeds, expect around four months until they’re ready to harvest. On the other hand, growing from onion sets speeds things up a bit, with maturity reached in about three months. Just plant the root end of a mature onion into the soil—soon enough, you’ll have fresh, tender green shoots ready to enjoy!

Are Red onions harder to grow?

Red onions take about the same time to grow as any other onion variety. They're a biennial, just like other onions, and can be grown from seeds, onion sets, or even another onion. To help them thrive, make sure they’re in well-drained, slightly acidic soil, and give them consistent watering—especially during dry spells. They’ll also need at least 6 hours of sunlight each day. When the tops turn yellow and fall over, it’s time to harvest your onions!

Do onion seeds need heat?

Of course! Red onion seeds love warmth to get going—cooler temps can slow down their growth. Try to keep the soil temperature around 24°C for the best germination results. Also, make sure the soil stays consistently moist (but not soggy!) and give them plenty of sunlight. With the right warmth, water, and light, your red onions will sprout in no time!

Are Red onions healthy?

Absolutely! Red onions are loaded with goodness thanks to their high levels of antioxidants like anthocyanins and quercetin. These powerful compounds help support heart health, fight inflammation, and may even lower the risk of some chronic diseases. Plus, they’re a great source of Vitamin C and fiber, making them a tasty and healthy addition to your meals!
