Approx. seeds per gram: 3
Sowing
- Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing; the coat is hard and needs softening.
- Sow 2-3 cm deep directly in a large pot or grow bag. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to March, or June to July.
- Keep in a warm spot and maintain good moisture.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 7-12 days.
- Keep soil warm and moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Don't let it dry out during fruiting.
- Use a large pot or grow bag (at least 30 cm deep) with drainage holes.
- Provide an overhead trellis or pandal so the gourds can hang freely.
- Tie a small stone to the tip of young fruits to help them grow straight.
- Hand pollinate in the morning if fruit set is low.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Don't let fruits overmature. They turn orange-red, fibrous, and bitter.
- Reduced flowering and smaller fruits signal the vine is nearing the end of its cycle.
- Heavy monsoon rain can cause fungal issues; ensure good drainage and airflow.
- Once production stops, pull the vine out and sow fresh next season.
Harvesting
- Fruits are ready in 60-75 days.
- Harvest when gourds are tender, light green, and 30-45 cm long; don't wait for them to get too big.
- Cut with a sharp knife, leaving a little stem attached.
- Pick every 2-3 days to keep the vine producing.
