Product Details
Sunflower is one of the most dramatic and rewarding plants you can grow at home. Tall golden blooms, seeds packed with nutrition, and a plant that attracts birds and bees to your garden.
- Tall, dramatic golden flowers that brighten any garden, terrace, or balcony.
- Seeds are rich in healthy fats, vitamin E, magnesium, and protein; great for snacking.
- Attracts birds and bees; wonderful for biodiversity in home gardens.
- Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Potting Mix for a strong, vigorous start.
Sowing
- Sow seeds 2–3 cm deep directly in a large pot or grow bag. Sunflowers prefer direct sowing.
- Point the flat end of the seed downward and the pointed tip upward.
- Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix or Potting Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to May, when the weather is warm.
- Sunflowers germinate quickly in warmth; keep in a bright, warm spot after sowing.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 5–10 days.
- Keep soil warm and moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun immediately.
Transplanting
NA - Sunflowers grow best with direct sowing as the taproot dislikes disturbance.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6–8 hours daily. More sun means taller, sturdier plants.
- Water when the topsoil feels dry. Sunflowers are drought tolerant once established but need regular water while young.
- Use a large, deep pot (at least 40 cm) with drainage holes.
- Space plants 30–45 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
- Stake taller varieties; they can reach 1.5 metres and become top-heavy.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Sunflower is an annual. Once it completes its cycle, the plant dries out naturally.
- Save seeds from the dried head for re-sowing next season or for eating.
- Pull the plant out after seed harvest and sow fresh the following February.
- Leave a few dried heads standing for birds to feed on during winter.
Harvesting
- Flowers bloom in 60–80 days.
- For cut flowers, harvest when the outer petals have just opened but the centre is still firm.
- For seeds, wait until the back of the flower head turns yellow and then brown. Cut the head with 30 cm of stem and hang upside down in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks.
- Rub the dried head to release the seeds.
