    Product Details

Thai basil is a fragrant, spicy-sweet herb. It's a staple in Southeast Asian and Indian kitchens alike. Easy to grow and quick to bounce back after cutting.

    • Rich in antioxidants, vitamin A, and essential oils
    • One of the easiest ways to bring bold, aromatic flavour into everyday cooking
    • Toss it into stir-fries, soups, curries, or fresh herbal teas
    • Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, chemical-free basil all year round
    Sowing
    • Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in a seedling tray. Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
    • Best time to sow: February to March, or post-monsoon in September. Avoid peak winter cold.
    • Keep it indoors in low light during this time. Maintain good humidity.
    Germination
    • Seeds sprout in 5–10 days.
    • Keep soil moist during this period.
    • Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.
    Transplanting
    • Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 4–6 true leaves. This usually takes 20–25 days.
    • Transplant into a larger pot, at least 20-25 cm deep. Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
    • Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day. This reduces transplant shock.
    • Water well right after transplanting. Keep in partial shade for 1–2 days before moving to full sun.
    Growing
    • Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
    • Water with a gentle spray every alternate day. Soil should be well-draining.
    • Space plants 25–30 cm apart, rows 30–35 cm apart.
    • Feed with Ugaoo's cow manure every 20–25 days. Use Ugaoo's neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
    • Pinch off flower buds regularly. This keeps growth bushy and leafy.
    Aftercare & Post-Harvest
    • Don't let too many flower spikes remain on the plant. They reduce leaf production over time.
    • If the plant becomes woody and leggy with fewer leaves, it's nearing the end of its productive life.
    • Extreme cold in peak winter can stunt or damage the plant.
    • Once the plant declines significantly, prune hard to rejuvenate it. Or sow fresh the following season.
    Harvesting
    • Leaves are ready in 60–70 days.
    • Pick leaves and sprigs from the top, just above a leaf node. This encourages branching.
    • Harvest regularly. The more you prune, the bushier and more productive the plant becomes.
    • A healthy plant can be harvested continuously for several months.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Thai basil different than regular basil?

Yes, Thai basil is different from regular basil! While both belong to the same family, Thai basil has a spicy, peppery flavor with hints of anise and clove, making it a key ingredient in Southeast Asian dishes. On the other hand, regular basil (like Genovese) is milder and sweet, perfect for Italian dishes like pesto. Both are delicious—just different in taste!

Where is the best place to plant Thai basil?

Thai basil loves the sun! The best place to plant it is in a sunny spot that gets 6–8 hours of sunlight daily. It thrives in well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Whether in the ground or pots, ensure it's in a place where the air flows, keeping the plant happy and healthy.

Can I eat Thai basil raw?

Absolutely! Thai basil is delicious raw and can add a burst of flavor to your dishes. Its spicy, slightly sweet taste works wonders in salads, wraps, or as a garnish. It’s often used fresh in Thai cuisine to enhance soups, curries, and spring rolls. Go ahead, enjoy the fresh kick!

Is Thai basil easy to grow?

Yes, Thai basil is relatively easy to grow! It thrives in warm weather and plenty of sunlight. Just plant it in well-draining soil, water regularly, and it will grow like a charm. It’s also a great choice for pots, so even if you're short on space, you can enjoy this aromatic herb on your windowsill!
