Product Details

Widely consumed vegetable, Val beans also known as Lima Beans or Pawata in India is a great source of protein, vitamins and fibre. Val beans are flat, oval - shaped and whitish or greenish in colour. They are easy to prepare, taste rich and buttery and are packed with a lot of nutrients.

Sowing

Soak seeds in water for 6-8 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
Sow 2-3 cm deep directly in a large pot or grow bag. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
Best time to sow: June to September, with the monsoon.
Keep in a warm spot and maintain good moisture.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 5-8 days.
Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during this period.
Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.

Growing

Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water when the topsoil feels dry. Avoid waterlogging.
Use a large pot or grow bag (at least 30 cm deep) with drainage holes.
Provide a strong trellis, fence, or pandal; vines can climb 3-4 metres.
Flowering picks up as days get shorter in October-November.
Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.

Aftercare & Post-Harvest

Val is a cool-season bearer; production slows as temperatures rise from March.
Dry shelled beans fully in the shade before storing in an airtight jar.
Always cook val beans well before eating; never eat them raw.
Once done, cut the vine at soil level and leave the roots in; they add nitrogen to the soil.

Harvesting

Tender pods are ready in 80-100 days; mature beans in 100-120 days.
For fresh val, harvest pods when the beans inside are plump but the pods are still green.
For dry val, leave pods on the vine until they turn dry and brown, then shell.
Harvest regularly to encourage more flowering.
