Sowing
- Soak seeds in water for 6-8 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
- Sow 2-3 cm deep directly in a large grow bag (at least 45 cm deep) or in the ground. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: January to March, so fruits ripen in peak summer.
- Keep in a warm, sunny spot after sowing.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 5-10 days.
- Keep soil warm and moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.
Growing
- Needs full direct sun, at least 6-8 hours daily.
- Water deeply and regularly, at the base, in the morning. Avoid wetting the leaves.
- Use a very large grow bag or plant in the ground; vines can spread 2-3 metres.
- Hand pollinate by transferring pollen from male to female flowers (the ones with a tiny fruit behind them) in the morning.
- Keep only 2-3 fruits per vine for bigger, sweeter melons.
- Place a tile or dry straw under each fruit to keep it off damp soil.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Reduce watering in the last 7-10 days before harvest. It makes fruits sweeter.
- Overwatering near harvest can cause fruits to split.
- Once fruits are harvested and the vine starts drying, pull it out.
- Rotate the spot next season to keep the soil healthy.
Harvesting
- Fruits are ready in 80-100 days.
- Check ripeness three ways: the tendril nearest the fruit turns brown and dry, the patch touching the ground turns creamy yellow, and a tap gives a deep, hollow sound.
- Cut the fruit with a sharp knife, leaving a little stem attached.
- Watermelons don't ripen after picking, so wait until they're fully ready.
