Product Details
Commonly called Khair in Hindi, this deciduous tree is the prime source for cutechu (katha in hindi). This shady tree grows upto a heght of 50 feet and makes for excellent firewood and animal fdder. It also finds several uses in folk medicine, although there is no scietific backing of the same. Its wood is also used in furniture and toy making.
Sowing
- Pre-treat seeds before sowing: pour hot water over them and leave to soak overnight. This softens the hard coat and improves germination.
- Sow 1-2 cm deep in nursery bags or pots. Mixing Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix with garden soil gives seedlings a strong start.
- Best time to sow: March to June, so seedlings are ready for the monsoon.
- Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain consistent moisture.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 7-20 days after pre-treatment.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full sun.
Growing
- Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly in the first year. Once established, it is very drought tolerant.
- Plant 3-4 metres apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 30 days in the first year.
- Protect young plants from grazing animals.
- Branches carry sharp thorns; avoid planting near paths and play areas.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- A perennial tree that becomes largely self-sufficient after 2-3 years.
- Water during long dry spells in the first 2 years.
- Wear gloves when handling; the thorns are sharp.
- Commercial harvesting of Khair may need local forest department permission.
Harvesting
- Khair is a long-term tree. Heartwood for timber and kattha is typically ready after 15-20 years.
- Prune lower branches in the early years for a cleaner trunk.
- Seed pods form after flowering and can be collected for re-sowing.
