Sowing
- Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in a seedling tray.
- Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to March, or June to July.
- Keep it in a warm, dark spot and maintain good humidity. Cover the top if needed.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 7–10 days.
- Keep soil moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.
Transplanting
- Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 4–5 true leaves, usually after 25–30 days.
- Transplant into a large pot or grow bag (at least 40 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
- Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day to reduce transplant shock.
- Water well after transplanting and keep in partial shade for 2–3 days before moving to full sun.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist, but avoid waterlogging. Soil should be well-draining.
- Use a large pot or grow bag with drainage holes.
- Space plants 60–75 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
- Provide light staking as the plant grows heavy with fruits.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Do not let fruits overstay on the plant. Overripe brinjal turns seedy and the plant slows down.
- Reduced flowering signals the plant is nearing end of cycle.
- Once production drops, pull the plant out and sow fresh.
- The plant can produce for 4–6 months under good conditions.
Harvesting
- Fruits are ready for harvest in 70–90 days from transplanting.
- Harvest when fruits are firm, shiny, and deep purple-black. Do not wait until the skin turns dull.
- Cut with a bit of stem attached using a sharp knife.
- Pick regularly to encourage the plant to keep producing more fruits.

Frequently asked questions
What is the name of Black brinjal?
The black brinjal, commonly known as aubergine or eggplant, is a member of the nightshade family. It is referred to by various regional names, including Baingan, Vangi, and Vankayya. This versatile vegetable can be used in a variety of dishes such as curries, stir-fries, and grilled preparations.
Are Eggplant seeds safe to eat?
Eggplant seeds are safe to eat, but their flavor can vary. Younger eggplants have tender seeds with a neutral taste, while mature eggplants contain darker seeds that may taste bitter due to the presence of a natural compound called alkaloid. If you prefer not to eat the seeds at all, you can easily scoop them out of the eggplant with a spoon.
Which month is best to plant Brinjal?
Brinjal, or eggplant, is a tropical vegetable that can be grown year-round. In Southern India and Northeast India, it thrives throughout the year. In North India, it is best planted between April and August, with June and July ideal for the rainy season, February and March for summer, and October and November for winter.
Do Eggplant seeds need soaking?
Eggplant seeds have a better chance of germinating if they are soaked for 24 hours before sowing. For optimal results, plant the seeds in a soilless medium, such as Ugaoo's Pot-O-Mix , and mist them regularly to maintain moisture in the soil. Once the seedlings develop, typically within five days, transplant them into pots and place them in an area that receives at least six hours of sunlight each day.
