Sowing
- Soak seeds in water for 6-8 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
- Sow 2-3 cm deep directly in a large pot or grow bag. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: February to April, when temperatures are warm.
- Keep in a warm, sunny spot after sowing.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 5-10 days.
- Keep soil warm and moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full direct sun.
Transplanting
NA - Cantaloupe grows best with direct sowing as it dislikes root disturbance.
Growing
- Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water deeply and regularly. Keep soil consistently moist during fruiting.
- Use a very large pot or grow bag with drainage holes.
- Provide a strong trellis. Large fruits may need support using cloth slings.
- Hand pollinate by transferring pollen from male to female flowers.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Once fruits are harvested, the vine may keep producing smaller fruits.
- Once the plant stops producing well, pull it out.
- High heat and irregular watering can cause fruit cracking; water consistently.
Harvesting
- Fruits are ready in 70-90 days.
- Harvest when the fruit detaches easily from the vine with slight pressure and has a strong sweet fragrance.
- The skin also develops a netted or yellow-green colouration at ripeness.
- Cut with a bit of stem attached using a sharp knife.

Frequently asked questions
Are Cantaloupe and Muskmelon the same?
Cantaloupes are a delightful variety of muskmelons, but not all muskmelons are cantaloupes! Muskmelons are a diverse group known for their sweet, juicy flesh and netted rinds, while cantaloupes are particularly renowned for their aromatic orange flesh. The word "musk" comes from the Persian term for "perfume," and "melon" has roots in the Latin "melopepo," meaning "apple-shaped melon." Discover the unique taste of cantaloupes—you won’t regret it!
What is the Indian name for Muskmelon?
An important member of the Cucurbitaceae family, Muskmelon is also known as Kharbooja in India. While ripe it emits a sweet/musky fragrance which gives it the name Kharbooja. Commonly known as Cantaloupe, Sweet melon or Kasturi in some regions this fruit with an orange color flesh and small yellow seeds is high in sugar content. All in all Muskmelons are a powerhouse of healthy nutrients and a perfect treat for summers!
How do you germinate Muskmelon seeds?
Select premium-quality seeds suited to your preferred Muskmelon variety to ensure optimal germination. Plant them in warm, well-drained loamy soil enriched with organic matter. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during germination, and place the seedlings in full sunlight once they emerge. Use a balanced fertilizer as needed and regularly check for pests and diseases to promote healthy growth.
