    Product Details

Celosia Cristata, or Cockscomb, is one of the most distinctive-looking flowers in any garden. Its velvety, crested or brain-shaped flower heads in vivid jewel colours are impossible to ignore.

    • Unique velvety crested flower heads in vivid shades of red, orange, pink, yellow, and gold.
    • Excellent for fresh and dried flower arrangements; retains colour and form when dried.
    • Heat tolerant and long-blooming; thrives in Indian summer.
    • Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Potting Mix, vibrant blooms all season long.
    Sowing
    • Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in a seedling tray. Seeds are very fine - sow sparingly. We recommend Ugaoo's Potting Mix for better results.
    • Best time to sow: February to May, when the weather is warm.
    • During this time, keep it in a warm, bright spot and maintain good humidity.
    Germination
    • Seeds sprout in 7–10 days.
    • Keep soil moist during this period.
    • Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct morning sun.
    Transplanting
    • Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 3–4 true leaves, usually after 15–20 days.
    • We suggest transplanting into a pot (at least 20 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Potting Mix.
    • Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day.
    • Water well after transplanting and keep in partial shade for 1–2 days before full sun.
    Growing
    • Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
    • Water when the topsoil feels dry. Celosia dislikes soggy roots - don't overwater.
    • Use a pot with drainage holes.
    • Space plants 20–25 cm apart.
    • Feed with cow manure every 20 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
    Aftercare & Post-Harvest
    • Celosia is an annual. It completes its lifecycle in one season.
    • Once main blooms fade and the plant declines, pull it out.
    • Allow some flower heads to dry on the plant and save seeds for next season.
    • Sow fresh seeds the following February.
    Harvesting
    • Flowers bloom in 60–75 days.
    • For fresh arrangements, cut when the bloom is fully formed but before it starts to fade.
    • For drying, cut at the same stage and hang upside down in a dry, airy spot for 2–3 weeks.
    • A healthy plant blooms continuously for 2–3 months.

    Frequently asked questions

How to grow Celosia cristata from seed?

Growing Celosia cristata (Cockscomb) from seeds is super easy! Sow seeds ¼ inch deep in well-draining soil, keep them warm (20-25°C), and watch tiny sprouts pop up in 7-14 days. Give them plenty of sunshine and water moderately. In around 85 days, you’ll have vibrant, velvety blooms stealing the show in your garden!

    What temperature does Celosia need?

Celosia loves it warm and sunny! It thrives in temperatures between 20-30°C—perfect for Indian gardens. If it gets too cold, the plant sulks. Too hot? Keep the soil consistently moist, and it’ll stay happy! Give it plenty of sunshine, and your Celosia will reward you with bold, velvety blooms all season long!

    Are Celosia seeds edible?

Yes! Celosia seeds are edible and packed with nutrients. In some cultures, they’re used as a grain, just like quinoa! Plus, Celosia leaves are also edible and cooked like spinach. So, while you admire those bold, velvety blooms, know that this plant is both a feast for the eyes and the plate!

Do Celosia seeds need light or dark to germinate?

Celosia seeds love the light! They need bright, indirect light to germinate, so just press them lightly into the soil—no burying! Keep the soil moist and warm (20-25°C), and in 7-14 days, tiny sprouts will appear. Give them sunshine, and they’ll grow into stunning, velvety blooms!
