Product Details

Desi Carrot is a classic Indian long variety with a sweet, rich flavour that beats any supermarket carrot. Grown fresh from seed in your own home garden, it is a winter reward worth waiting for.

• Long, sweet, deep orange roots rich in beta-carotene, vitamin A, and fibre.
• Freshly harvested desi gajar at home tastes nothing like store-bought.
• Great in gajar halwa, sabzi, salads, fresh juice, and soups.
• Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, chemical-free gajar all winter long.
Sowing
• Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep directly in the pot or grow bag. Carrots must be direct sown; they do not transplant.
• Loosen the soil deeply before sowing; compact soil causes forked and stunted roots.
• Mix seeds with a little sand for even spreading as they are very fine.
• Use Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
• Best time to sow: October to January, in the cool season.
Germination
• Seeds sprout in 10–14 days. Carrot seeds are fine and can be slow; keep soil consistently moist.
• Once sprouts appear, thin seedlings to 5–8 cm apart.
• Move to a bright spot with direct or morning sun.
Transplanting

NA - Carrots must be direct sown. Transplanting causes forked, deformed roots.

Growing
• Needs 5–6 hours of sunlight daily.
• Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Irregular watering causes roots to crack or fork.
• Use a deep pot (at least 35–40 cm deep) with drainage holes. Long varieties need depth.
• Space plants 5–8 cm apart, rows 20–25 cm apart.
• Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers; they promote leaves, not roots.
• Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
• Carrots do not regrow after harvest. Sow fresh batches every 3–4 weeks for a continuous supply through winter.
• Rising temperatures from February cause carrots to bolt and turn bitter.
• Once the plant sends up a flower stalk, the root is no longer good to eat. Pull and discard.
• Sow fresh the following October for the next winter season.
Harvesting
• Roots are ready for harvest in 70–90 days.
• Check by gently brushing soil away from the shoulder of the root. Harvest when the root is 1.5–2 cm in diameter at the top.
• Pull carefully by grasping the greens at the base and easing the root out of the soil.
• Harvest before the root becomes too large; overgrown carrots turn woody and lose sweetness.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best month to sow carrots seeds?

The best time to sow carrot seeds depends on the climate! In India, sow them from October to February when temperatures are cool (15-25°C). Carrots love loose, well-draining soil, so plant them in Ugaoo’s Pot-O-Mix for the best results. With a little patience, you'll be harvesting sweet, crunchy carrots in just 70-80 days!

Is Carrot a summer or Winter crop?

Carrots are a winter crop! They thrive in cool temperatures (15-25°C) and grow best when sown from October to February in India. Hot weather can make them bitter and tough, so give them a cozy, cool-season start for sweet, crunchy harvests!

What is the best fertilizer for carrots?

Carrots love a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertilizer to grow strong, sweet, and perfectly shaped! A balanced organic fertilizer like Ugaoo’s Organic Veggie Mix is perfect—it nourishes the roots without promoting excess leafy growth. Mix in some compost or well-rotted Cow Manure for an extra boost, and watch your Desi carrots thrive!

How long do carrots take to grow from seeds?

Carrots take about 70-80 days to grow from seeds to harvest-ready roots! They germinate in 7-14 days, depending on temperature and soil moisture. Keep the soil loose, well-draining, and nutrient-rich, and soon you’ll have sweet, crunchy carrots ready to pull from the ground!
