Product Details
Commonly called hopbush, this flowering tree from the soapberry family is regionally called lutchmi in marathi and mohra in Oriya. Various parts of the tree are used extensively to treat malaria, rheumatism, burns, sprains, disgestive disorders etc. The wood is used for making tool handles, frames, and charcoal. It is also grown for soil reclamation.
Sowing
- Pre-treat seeds before sowing: pour hot water over them and leave to soak overnight. This softens the hard coat and improves germination.
- Sow 0.5 cm deep in a seedling tray or nursery bags. Mixing Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix with sand gives seedlings a good start.
- Best time to sow: February to May, in warm weather.
- Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain consistent moisture.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 15-30 days. Germination can be uneven, so patience is needed.
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to full sun.
Growing
- Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
- Water regularly in the first year. Once established, it needs very little water.
- Plant 60-90 cm apart for a dense hedge.
- Trim 2-3 times a year to keep it bushy and shapely.
- Feed with cow manure every 30 days in the first year.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- A long-lived perennial shrub that needs very little care once established.
- Avoid overwatering; soggy soil is its biggest enemy.
- Cut back old, woody stems every few years to refresh growth.
- Excellent for coastal gardens and erosion-prone slopes.
Harvesting
- Hop Bush is grown for hedging and screening.
- Winged seed capsules form after flowering; collect dry ones for re-sowing.
- Regular trimming keeps growth dense and tidy.
