Product Details

A medium-sized tropical tree with a grey to red-brown coloured smooth bark. It folwers spraodically through the year with pale pink blooms. It is grown extensively in agroforestry to establish shade and support, along with providing green manure, forage in plantations, and high protein fodder. It is also used as an ornamental plant in landscaping.

Sowing

Soak seeds in water for 12-24 hours before sowing to speed up germination.
Sow 1-2 cm deep in nursery bags or directly in the ground. Mixing Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix with garden soil gives seedlings a strong start.
Best time to sow: March to June, ahead of the monsoon.
Keep in a warm, bright spot and maintain consistent moisture.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 5-10 days.
Keep soil moist during this period.
Once sprouts appear, move to full sun.

Growing

Needs full direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water regularly in the first year. Once established, it handles drought very well.
Plant 1-2 metres apart for live fences and hedges.
Feed with cow manure every 30 days in the first year.
Protect young plants from grazing animals.

Aftercare & Post-Harvest

Gliricidia is a perennial tree that regrows strongly after cutting.
Once established, it needs almost no care.
Use only small amounts of foliage as fodder, mixed with other feed.
Seeds and bark are not edible; keep them away from children.

Harvesting

Leaves and branches can be lopped from the first year for green manure, mulch, or fodder.
Prune back hard 2-3 times a year; it regrows quickly.
Spread chopped leaves around crops or mix them into the soil to enrich it.
