Helichrysum, or Strawflower, is one of the finest everlasting flowers you can grow. Jewel-bright papery blooms that look just as beautiful dried as they do fresh, and they last for months.

Papery, vivid blooms in red, orange, pink, yellow, and white.
One of the best everlasting flowers; retains colour and form beautifully when dried.
Long-blooming through the cool months with minimal attention.

Sowing

Surface sow seeds by pressing them lightly into the soil. Don't cover; they need light to germinate.
We suggest Ugaoo's Potting Mix for better results.
Best time to sow: October to November, at the start of the cool season.
During this time, mist gently; don't drench. Keep the surface moist.

Germination

Seeds sprout in 7-14 days.
Keep the soil surface lightly moist; mist gently every 1-2 days.
Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct sun.

Transplanting

Transplant once seedlings have 3-4 true leaves, usually after 20-25 days.
Transplant into a pot (at least 20 cm deep) with Ugaoo's Potting Mix.
Transplant in the evening. Water well after.

Growing

Needs direct sun, at least 6 hours daily.
Water when the topsoil feels dry. Strawflowers are drought tolerant; don't overwater.
Use a pot with drainage holes.
Space plants 20-30 cm apart.
Feed lightly with cow manure every 25 days.
Use neem cake and neem oil spray if pests appear.

Aftercare & Post-Harvest

Helichrysum declines as temperatures rise from February.
Once flowering slows, pull the plant out.
Allow some flower heads to dry and save seeds for next season.

Harvesting

Flowers bloom in 70-90 days.
For fresh arrangements, cut when blooms are just opening.
For drying, cut at the same stage and hang upside down in a dry, airy spot for 2-3 weeks.
A healthy plant blooms continuously for 2-3 months.
