Who says Italian is all about pastas? Their salads are both healthy and lip-smacking. The black rose lettuce is a relatively unknown variety, but just as amazing as any. It has curly, fan-shaped leaves in deep red and a shiny surface. The leaves form a compact rosette when they grow 5- to 8-inches. This lettuce has a slightly bitter and nutty flavour, making it the perfect balance for sweeter lettuces or dressings.
    Sowing
    • Sow seeds 0.25-0.5 cm deep in a seedling tray or directly in the pot. Seeds are fine; sow sparingly and cover lightly.
    • We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
    • Best time to sow: October to January, in the cool season.
    • During this time, keep in a bright spot with indirect light and maintain good humidity.
    Germination
    • Seeds sprout in 5-10 days.
    • Keep soil moist during this period.
    • Once sprouts appear, move to a spot with bright light and some morning sun.
    Growing
    • Needs 4-5 hours of sunlight daily. More sun brings out a deeper leaf colour.
    • Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Dry soil makes leaves bitter.
    • Use a pot with drainage holes.
    • Space plants 20-25 cm apart.
    • Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
    Aftercare & Post-Harvest
    • Lettuce bolts quickly as temperatures rise from February.
    • If a central flower stalk appears, harvest everything right away; leaves turn bitter after bolting.
    • Sow a fresh batch every 2-3 weeks for a steady supply through winter.
    • Store leaves in a container lined with a paper towel in the fridge.
    Harvesting
    • Leaves are ready in 45-55 days.
    • Pick the outer leaves at the base, leaving the centre to keep growing.
    • Harvest in the morning when leaves are crisp.
    • You can also cut the whole plant 3-4 cm above the soil; it often regrows for a second harvest.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the benefit of Black rose lettuce?

Black Rose Lettuce isn’t just a pretty face—it’s packed with crunch, flavor, and nutrition! This deep-hued beauty is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, making your salads both stunning and super healthy. Plus, its slightly sweet, crisp leaves add a gourmet touch to any dish. Who knew eating greens (or purples!) could be this fancy?

Should I soak lettuce Black rose seeds before planting?

Not really! Black Rose Lettuce seeds germinate well without soaking. Just sow them directly into a moist, well-draining medium like Coco Peat, and they’ll sprout happily in just 5-10 days. A light misting of water with a sprayer will do the trick and give your seeds a more nurturing environment. Keep it simple, and let nature work its magic! Once your seeds have sprouted and grown at least 2 true leaves, transplant them into well-draining soil like Ugaoo's Pot-O-Mix.

How much water does lettuce need?

Lettuce loves consistent moisture! Aim for about 1–1.5 inches of water per week, keeping the soil evenly damp but not waterlogged. In hot weather, water more often to prevent wilting. A quick soil check—if the top 2-3 inches feel dry, it’s time to hydrate your leafy greens!

Do lettuce seeds need lots of water?

Lettuce seeds love moisture, but they don’t like soggy feet! Keep the soil consistently damp—like a well-wrung sponge—for the quick germination. A gentle misting or light watering daily should do the trick. Once they sprout, water regularly but avoid overwatering. Happy, hydrated lettuce means crisp, delicious leaves for your salads!
