- Rich in vitamin C, vitamin K, and anthocyanins that support immunity and heart health.
- Delicious raw, pickled, stir-fried, or braised; great in coleslaw, salads, and wraps.
- Grow it organically in Ugaoo's Veggie Mix Soil, chemical-free laal patta gobhi all winter long.
Approx. seeds per gram: 210
Sowing
- Sow seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in a seedling tray. We recommend Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix for better results.
- Best time to sow: September to October, ahead of the cool season.
- During this time, keep it in a cool, bright spot and maintain good humidity.
Germination
- Seeds sprout in 5–8 days.
- Keep soil moist during this period.
- Once sprouts appear, move to a bright spot with direct morning sun.
Transplanting
- Seedlings are ready to transplant once they have 4–5 true leaves, usually after 20–25 days.
- We suggest transplanting into a large pot or grow bag (at least 35 cm deep and 40 cm wide) with Ugaoo's Organic Veggie Mix.
- Transplant in the evening or on a cloudy day.
- Water well after transplanting and keep in partial shade for 2–3 days before full sun.
Growing
- Needs 5–6 hours of sunlight daily.
- Water regularly to keep soil consistently moist. Inconsistent watering causes heads to crack.
- Use a large pot with good drainage. Don't crowd the plants.
- Space plants 45–60 cm apart.
- Feed with cow manure every 15 days. Use neem cake and neem oil spray to keep pests away.
- Check underneath leaves regularly - caterpillars love brassicas and hide there.
Aftercare & Post-Harvest
- Don't let heads sit on the plant after they mature. They crack and deteriorate quickly.
- Rising temperatures from February cause bolting.
- Once the head is harvested, pull the plant and prepare for the next crop.
- Sow fresh seeds the following September.
Harvesting
- Heads are ready 90–110 days from transplanting - a little longer than green cabbage.
- Harvest when the head feels firm and compact when squeezed.
- Cut at the base with a sharp knife.
- Red cabbage stores very well - keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks after harvest.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to grow Red cabbage from seed?
Red Cabbage typically takes about 70–90 days to grow from seed to harvest. When placed in a warm, well-lit environment, the seeds germinate within 7–10 days and can grow up to 1–2 inches per week during their peak growing phase. Key factors like temperature, sunlight, soil quality, watering, and proper fertilization play a crucial role in the plant’s successful development and timely maturity
Is Red cabbage easy to grow?
Red Cabbage is a fairly easy plant to grow and can be started from seeds either indoors or outdoors. It thrives in a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter and a good level of humidity
What is the best fertilizer for Red cabbage?
Cabbage thrives in nutrient-rich soil with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer, compost tea, or fish emulsion every 2–3 weeks after transplanting. This keeps the plants healthy and encourages strong head formation for a great harvest.
What season does Red cabbage grow?
Red Cabbage grows best when the weather is nice and cool—between 15 and 20°C. You can sow the seeds in Jan–Feb or again from July–Nov. All it needs is some good soil, enough sunlight (6 hours or more), and a little love. In about 75–90 days, you’ll be enjoying your very own crunchy, colorful cabbage!
